Now this may seem like a strange question, but the answer is actually is yes you can! So long as that glass is full of plants!!

ARE YOU READY TO CHANGE YOUR HEALTH?
It has become incredibly well known that the more natural, (preferably chemical free) foods you consume on a daily basis, the lower your risks for disease like cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune conditions, digestive diseases (Crohns and Colitis) and energy issues like chronic fatigue. Just look at this chart by Dr. Joel Fuhrman MD

As a Nutritionist, I understand there are a few factors that most individuals and families struggle with when it comes to eating enough plant foods daily. These include:

  1. Cost of good organic produce.  Many families are living on budgets and often the organic varieties (lets face it even some non-organic varieties) are incredibly expensive. We suggest you grow your own year round learn more here!
  2. Prep time, not only are most individuals and families living on budget, but time has become our most desired commodity, and for most people, the prep time required to prepare healthy plant dishes for meals and snacks is not scheduled into daily routines.
  3. The Quality Sucks! Well maybe not all the time, but most of us have purchased fresh herbs, fruit and veggies only to have them “go bad” during the drive home!! Lets not forget much of our produce is NOT vine ripened, and often picked prematurely, and then artificially ripened on a truck as its being transported to our local grocer.  *Most of the plants nutrients and antioxidants are present only during the last few days of ripening, making most of the prematurely picked produce incredibly nutrient deficient! Check out Tower Gardens Here!

 4.  We lack variety! Many of us who do make a point of eating plant foods everyday, tend to stick to the same       varieties which means we are missing out on a multitude of health building antioxidants and phytonutrients found in other varieties of plants.

5.   We have no idea what to do with them!  This is the number one reason my clients do not purchase nor consume enough plant foods daily.  Many of us in the Gen Y, Z and Millennial age groups grew up in homes with two working parents and food preparation (of the non frozen food variety) is a seriously lacking skill.  The problem is, this is also the generations that are leading our next generation!!

Obviously something needs to give! And in all my years experience as a nutritionist, I know the BEST SOLUTIONS are often the simplest.  Its incredible what happens when you can make a few small health changes at home, and one of my favourites is incorporating a healthy smoothie.

SMOOTHIES ARE AN AMAZING DAILY HEALTH BUILDING STRATEGY, WHICH HAS A COMPOUNDING EFFECT.

These are the reasons why I always encourage my clients to start with a daily smoothie,......
  1. They are easy peasy! Smoothie preparation takes no more time, than it takes to grab a few healthy ingredients and throw them in your blender.
  2. There are some incredibly yummy recipes!! (see below for my 2 fav!)
  3. You can add lots of Variety!! It’s easy to add 3-6 different healthy plant foods daily into your diet through a healthy smoothie!
  4. Smoothies are relatively cost effective!! It can cost anywhere from $3-$6 for a home made nutrient boosting smoothie which costs far less than a lunch out or a couple trips to the coffee shop!! And this can feed 1-3 people at a time!
  5. Easy to hide veggies!! You can use both fruit and veggies, nuts and seeds and fresh herbs in a smoothie and it will still taste amazing!
  6. They Stabilize Blood sugar. If you are using the whole plant, you are also adding lots of added dietary fibre and guess what!? Fibre stabilized blood sugar, which helps you feel fuller longer!

HOW TO MAKE YOUR SMOOTHIES EVEN MORE AMAZING

  1. Go Green!! Add spinach, kale, parsley, cucumbers, and avocados to your smoothies. Now you don’t have to add them all, just a one or two will do.  And while you’re at it look up the INCREDIBLE health benefits of chlorophyll!
  2. Create Routine.  The trick to benefiting from Smoothies is to actually drink one every day!  Find a time in your day where you know you can consistently incorporate a smoothie into your routine.  For example many individuals find it easy to make a smoothie for breakfast, where others find time at the office to make theirs in the afternoon, for an energy boost. I know many parents who like to have theirs after school with their children as a healthy snack before sports or errands.  The Trick is setting a time that works and being consistent. After a week, you will wonder how you ever lived without them!
  3. Use Plant Protein!!!!!!! Ok so this should be the MOST IMPORTANT tip of this entire article.  Whey based proteins are tough to digest, are a significant cause of inflammation and are toxic if consumed in excess!!! (say to to Whey Click Here).  I ONLY recommend a plant based protein mix because plants are clean burning, safe for children and you cannot overdose on them.  The shake mix I use with my clients and my children is Juice Plus Complete (buy yours here)
